Laser Microperforation

Laser perforation is the modern and flexible approach to microperforation. Learn about how it works and its areas of application.

Laser Microperforation

What is Laser Microperforation?

The goal of perforation is to introduce holes with small diameters into various materials in a controlled manner and with precise placement. This perforation can serve various purposes. Obvious applications include tear edges, optical elements in paper or cardboard packaging, or opening perforations (Easy Opening) for packages.

Today, laser perforation is very frequently used when it comes to creating targeted ventilation - such as with packaging for fresh food, in cigarettes, or in membranes.

Laser perforation has many advantages over other methods, for example:

  • Contactless, thus free from mechanical wear
  • Achievement of high speeds
  • High precision and the smallest micro-perforations (or smallest hole sizes)
  • No tool changes are required to adjust hole sizes and shapes

Applications for Laser Microperforation Technology

Laser microperforation technology, known for its precision, high speed, and cost-efficiency, is increasingly favored across various industries. By eliminating the need for traditional tooling and reducing changeover times, it provides versatile solutions for modern manufacturing challenges. Here are some perforation applications where laser technology is already making a significant difference:

Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) & Breathable Packaging:

Extending Freshness: Laser perforation is integral in creating controlled ventilation for packaging films, a process essential for prolonging the shelf life of perishables like fruits, vegetables, and cut flowers. By adjusting the gas composition within the packaging, products stay fresh for longer, reducing waste and enhancing consumer satisfaction. This is referred to as MAP or Breathable Packaging

Easy Open Packaging:

Enhanced User Experience: The precision of laser perforation allows for the design of easy-open packaging, a feature highly valued in the food sector and by FMCG providers. This technology improves product accessibility and convenience, offering a more user-friendly experience for consumers.

Cigarette Tipping Paper:

Regulated Filtration: In the tobacco industry, microperforation is employed to maintain compliance with health regulations. It precisely controls the air-to-smoke ratio by adjusting filter ventilation, thereby helping to limit the inhalation of harmful substances. This precision is applicable during both the tipping paper production and the cigarette manufacturing stages.

Controlled ventilation:

Regulated ventilation: Many industrial processes require controlled ventilation. From automotive parts and filter

media to electronic components, cat litter bags and frozen food packaging, for example - the

applications for laser microperforation are many and varied.

These applications showcase the adaptability and efficiency of laser perforation technology in responding to diverse industrial needs. From preserving the freshness of food to ensuring product compliance with health standards, laser perforation is a pivotal innovation in modern manufacturing practices, promising enhanced quality, consumer satisfaction, and operational efficiency.

What Materials can be perforated with a Laser System?

Laser perforation is versatile, effectively handling a range of materials including mono- and composite films (such as OPP, PE, PE-LD, PET, PP, CPP, EVA, PLA), along with paper and kraft paper. Its ability to achieve exceptionally high speeds makes it ideal for web and roll materials that require rapid processing.

FAQ

Laser perforation offers numerous advantages over other perforation methods. For instance, the perforation, meaning the hole size and shape, can be easily adjusted just by changing software parameters. The hole position, hole diameter, and hole-to-hole distances are precisely and repeatably maintained. There's no need for a tool change or even a new tool.

In the food sector, the contactless processing by the laser can also be an advantage. Thanks to specially developed laser beam guides and specific laser sources, MLT laser machines achieve absolute precision even at the highest speeds.

Furthermore laser microperforation can easily be combined with other laser technologies like laser scoring and laser cutting.

Are you unsure if laser perforation is suitable for your application? Ask us - we are happy to advise you without obligation! Contact us!

For most applications, hole diameters in the range of 60µm to 800µm are produced. There are also possibilities outside of this range. Holes as small as 10µm can be reached but result in a reduction of the possible production speed.
